Before you begin the domain registration process, it is helpful to gather all the required contact information and technical settings. Modern registrars make the registration process very quick, but having this data ready beforehand prevents configuration errors.

1. Registrant & Administrative Contact Information

Under international ICANN policies, every registered domain must be associated with valid contact details. You will need to provide:

  • The Registrant Name: The legal owner of the domain (this can be you or your organization).
  • A Valid Email Address: Essential for receiving critical notifications, domain renewal reminders, and verification links.
  • Mailing Address & Phone Number: Required for registry WHOIS records.

[!TIP] A Note on Privacy: Historically, all contact information was public in WHOIS databases. Today, most modern registrars provide free WHOIS Privacy Protection (often called WHOIS Guard or Privacy Shield) to mask your personal details from spam databases.

2. DNS Nameservers (Technical Settings)

Computers communicate using numerical IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (such as 192.0.2.1), which are strings of numbers representing servers. Humans use domain names (like enterthegroup.com) because they are much easier to remember. The Domain Name System (DNS) serves as the directory that maps human-friendly names to numerical IP addresses.

To link your domain name to your hosting space, you need nameservers.

  • Primary and Secondary Nameservers: Registrars require at least two separate DNS server addresses (e.g., ns1.examplehost.com and ns2.examplehost.com) to check reliability and ensure redundancy. If one nameserver goes offline, the second one resolves requests.
  • Where to find them: If you have already purchased web hosting, your provider will give you their specific nameserver addresses. If you haven’t chosen a web host yet, you can use your domain registrar’s Default DNS servers for the time being, and update them later.

Once you have gathered your contact info and have your hosting provider’s nameservers ready, you are prepared to fill out the registration form.
